about me
July 25, 2008so you want to know something about me…
my name is scott nichol and i am an accomplished fine art and figure photographer. this means that i often work with the naked human figure as an artistic object in my photography. some people may take offense to this or see it as some sort of pr0nography or perversion. if that’s the case, i’m sorry. i’m not sorry for my means of artistic expression, i’m just sorry that your mind has been so narrowed as to only be able to see the human body as a sexual object.
it is confusing to me that our society in general feels that it is often more acceptable to portray visions of violence, pain, and suffering than it is to show the beauty of the human form. don’t believe me? tune into any episode of Law & Order or CSI. they will gladly show you the myriad of ways a person can die a horrible death, but if janet jackson shows a half-covered breast for 2 seconds at a football game, then the FCC needs to start worrying about how to protect our children.
sorry, back to photography, art, and objects of beauty… i primarily work digitally and this gives me an incredible amount of flexibility for artistic expression. and while i don’t exactly work to mimic the exact film grains, i do strive to achieve something that approaches the feel that comes from working with film. in my work, i am typically manipulating contrast curves and blending modes to achieve something that has depth and expresses the emotion that i seek from my subjects.
my work with the nude generally focus on two discrete genres of photography. the first is an expression of emotion, form, and beauty set against outdoor landscapes. these images express for me a freedom of the human spirit, a connectedness to the earth, and a realization that we’re all one within the universe. the second genre is a simplified approach to studio work. my lighting is often a simple single source that wraps and envelops my subjects in a soft light. when combined with the model’s expressions and poses, these photographs evoke emotions and feelings that often move me deeply.
i have a extensive galleries of my fine art figure work here. these galleries offer collectors the ideal opportunity to purchase my work directly from me without the added expense incurred by gallery commissions and others who wish to profit from my hard work! all of my prints are made on archival cotton rag papers (hahnemuehle, crane, and ilford) using Epson’s K3 ink set. for the black and white and toned monochrome images, prints are made with Epson’s advanced black and white mode which primarily uses the 3 carbon-based pigment inks. this ensures a long life for the print when properly stored (framed and under glass).
