Solarization

Hedy – Solarization

sometimes, even when i’m really careful, i make mistakes developing my film. this one wasn’t terrible, but i think the exposure was off just a little bit. so, when i scanned the negative, i wasn’t entirely happy with the contrast on the negative. and as i was playing with curves and such in photoshop, i kinda stumbled on this slightly solarized look and i just liked it, so i’m going to go with it like this.

love it? hate it? leave a comment!

Everglades

Katlyn - Everglades Direct Positive

Katlyn – Everglades Direct Positive

Katlyn, Peter, and I headed out to the Everglades when I went to visit her in Florida last month. I found an interesting spot where I could contrast some of the endless overhead power lines with Florida’s attempt to preserve the natural ecosystem. In the end we didn’t get eaten by a crocodile, which is good.

a while back i bought a bunch of Ilford Direct Positive paper. This is photo paper that you can load into a large format camera and shoot just like film, however when you process it, you do so in traditional black and white paper chemistry and the result is a positive image instead of a negative image. this was the first time i’d used it with a live model and at first i wasn’t terribly impressed with the results. the photos looked horribly underexposed. but after looking at them again, i see them as simply low-key and actually find them quite compelling. i hope you do too.
